The Social Work Practice, Education and Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards designates that field education as the "signature pedagogy" in social work educations. Through field education, students are successfully socialized into our profession and learn how to perform the role of a social work practitioner in any agency setting. BSW and MSW students are able to connect what is learned in the classroom, link that knowledge, and use it within the practice environment at their agency.
The School of Social Work at UNC Charlotte utilizes a concurrent field model that allows students to be placed in an agency for their practice experience at the same time they are enrolled in classes. Students are placed in an agency for a full academic year for both years of the MSW program. Field Placements will begin the first week of classes and each student should verify the exact date with the Field Education Department. During this time the students are exposed to specific learning experiences that are closely supervised and evaluated by specific criteria that allow students to demonstrate competence.
We encourage prospective students to explore the field education site and learn more about field education as a component of a BSW major or MSW graduate program. Current students, Field Instructors, and Field Liaisons will also be able to use this site as a resource. Please do not hesitate to contact firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
