School Social Work Licensure

FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK LICENSURE

Graduates of the BSW and MSW program who meet certain conditions may qualify for licensure as a school social worker in the state of North Carolina.  The School Social Work license is awarded by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Students interested in School Social Work licensure should begin planning with their advisors and the Field Education Director as early in the program as possible.

BSW Level Licensure

To be eligible for school social work licensure:

  • Successfully complete a two-semester field placement in a school setting
  • Take SOWK 4102 School Social Work Course

MSW Level Licensure

To be eligible for school social work licensure:

  • Successfully complete a two-semester field placement in a school setting
  • Take SOWK 5102 School Social Work Course
  • Take one additional approved elective:
    • Introduction to Special Education
    • Critical Issues in Elementary Education
    • Multicultural Counseling
    • Solution-Focused Grief Therapy
    • Legal Aspects of Schools
    • School Law for Counselors and Related Professions
    • Other school and children related courses may be approved by the Field Education Office
