The breakout session descriptions for Students4Giving’s 2018 event are provided below. Please review to make a selection for the conference.

  • Supporting Trafficking Survivors – Andrea Firpo, FBI
    • This breakout session will provide information on how best to support trafficking survivors. It will identify risk factors, cover the trauma associated with trafficking, and highlight the needs survivors have as they transition out of trafficking.
  • Working with Unaccompanied Minors – Oliver Merino, Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy
    • Children who arrive in the United States without their parents are often fleeing incredible violence. When they arrive, they have little social supports and are in danger of exploitation, trafficking, or other abuse. Helping these children rediscover safety and overcome their trauma is a unique challenge that requires special skills and insight. This session will help attendees better understand the realities faced by unaccompanied minors and the resources available to support them.
  • Transgenerational Trauma in Immigrant Families – Paulina Chin-Camino, Community Center
    • Transgenerational trauma was first documented in the descendants of Holocaust survivors. It has been linked to both psychological and physiological transmission factors. Today, this trauma is seen regularly among immigrant groups. This breakout session will provide an overview on transgenerational trauma, how it can present in immigrant families, and interventions to address this trauma.
  • Advocacy/Social Justice – Pat Krikorian and Haley Soloman-Lily, Pad Haven
    • This breakout session will help educate conference participants on existing advocacy efforts supporting immigrants and human trafficking survivors. It will also provide participants with an advocacy toolkit to help support existing efforts, or to start your own.

Featuring a session on complex trauma led by Laura Greenhalgh (MS, NCC, NCSC, LPCS), the Executive Director for Creative Counseling & Learning Solutions.
