GSWA Membership and Activities

Membership to GSWA:

All MSW students, whether full-time, advanced standing, or extended program, are automatically members of the GSWA.  The GSWA is the Graduate Social Work Association, and it exists to support and represent the MSW students.  GSWA Officer elections are held at the end of the Fall semester each year.  Recruiting for these positions starts earlier in the fall semester, and students can be nominated by other parties and are also welcome to nominate themselves for positions.  If more than one person is interested in each respective position, there will be elections held, and the position will be awarded to the person with the most votes.  If there is only one person interested in any of the positions, they will automatically be awarded with the position.  Officer terms are January-December.

GSWA Activities:

GSWA typically holds student social events monthly, called a "Happy Hour", at various restaurants in the University area.  These events are informal and are usually to help students get to know one another and also to let off steam from our stressful responsibilities.  We also complete one service project each semester, and it is usually chosen by the current GSWA members.  Last Fall GSWA raised money for the Girl Talk foundation to purchase Christmas gifts for children in need.  Last Spring we held a food drive and donated items to Second Harvest Food Bank, and also volunteered our physical labor to Joshua's Farm, a therapeutic horse ranch in Charlotte.

Current & prospective students will be able to get some insight into student activities and useful information from GSWA website.
