Chair's Message

In my mind, the Department of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte provides students with an unparalleled educational experience.  Faculty and staff members are readily accessible and actively engage students in education, research, and service to others.  In partnership with a vibrant Community Advisory Board, the Department has made a concerted effort to reach out and address the needs of our community, region, country, and world.  Faculty members and students are talented and work diligently to embrace professional social work education and practice.  Growing research and instructional synergies in the Department include:  interpersonal violence, mental health, health disparities, child welfare, international practice, and Latino studies.

I am pleased to announce that at its June (2008) meeting, the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education reaffirmed our BSW and MSW programs for 8 years of accreditation.  The Department takes pride in providing quality social work education.  With re-accreditation completed, during the 2008-09 academic year, we aspire to change our status from a department to a “school of social work”.
With 16 full-time faculty members and a host of part-time colleagues dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and a research extensive learning environment, becoming a school of social work more accurately captures our current identity.

If possible, consider visiting our outstanding academic home on the 4th floor of the beautiful College of Health and Human Services Building.  You can experience for yourself our wonderful facilities and spirited students, faculty, and staff.  When you arrive on campus, look for the copper dome near the Atkins Library.  The entrance to social work at UNC Charlotte awaits you under the copper dome!
